Bookin' Along the Mississippi

Yesterday I made my fourth trip to the Clinton area this summer, this time for the Clinton Book Fair hosted by the public library. Almost thirty authors were set up in a tent outside the library displaying their wares while panel discussions and readings took place inside the library. Since the tent was open, we were all very glad that the predicted showers did not take place, although a stiff breeze played havoc with bookmarks, business cards, and other paper from time to time.

I had a chance to visit with nearly all of the writers and collected emails for a number who are interested in our own upcoming Book Bums Workshop in early November. One of the star attractions was Leigh Michaels, from Ottumwa, who has published over 100 books. Makes my eight seem like a walk in the park. My S'mores Treats were a hit, although the humidity did enhance the stickiness a bit. One group of three young boys circled by several times and, since they didn't buy any of my books, I don't think that was the attraction to my table.

On Friday night, there was a reception for all of the writers and guests at the Wide River Winery north of Clinton. This is a beautiful spot overlooking the river, and we enjoyed visiting with the others, as well as appetizers and a refreshing frappe dessert.
Today, our family in the area will gather for a couple of celebrations. Our grandson Tuan has just returned from a seven month absence for training as an Ordnance Technician in the National Guard. And his brother Ty will turn 25 this coming Saturday. Plus we will be able to catch up with the younger ones' beginnings of a new school year. I'm not sure Steven and Sophie's start of their junior year will be able to match Elliot's tales of seventh grade, but we'll see.

Then we will return to preparations for our launch on Friday for a trip of several weeks to the Dakotas and Montana. The carpet has been replaced, the folding stove cover is installed and the bike rack has been mounted. Don't ask about the awning.
