A Sweet Weekend at Sugarbottom

I must admit I have had a long held bias overturned. I have never had any desire to camp at Sugarbottom, one of several Corps of Engineers campgrounds on the Coralville Reservoir. It seems like all you ever hear about it is wild parties or boating accidents or even drownings. I'm a little past that stage. But we had not reserved a site anywhere for this weekend and it seemed like a good time to camp. The only sites left at the Res were at Sugarbottom--61 to be precise.

Butch had driven through here years ago, scoping it out and after looking at the map said he thought #85 was a good spot. This from someone who claims he can't remember what he ate yesterday. But he was spot on. Well, to be honest, #86 was the one he was thinking of but it wasn't available anyway. This is a roomy site with just a small rise between us and the water. This part of the campground has a wonderful variety of old trees
. Campsites are well-spaced out and the shower house is excellent.

Of course, it rained yesterday. Not drenching but enough to make set up a challenge. Someone sent me a hint for my last book to always carry rain gear in your tow vehicle for just such a situation. Did I? No. So I performed my duties with Butch's old jacket draped over my head.

And it was chilly--possibly record cold for the date.  I guess it's my Nordic blood but this is my kind of camping weather. We do not agree about this at our house. Butch said last night, "How did we ever get together?" He should have thought of that 51 years ago.

Because of the rain, our fire ring had a nice bird bath at the bottom of it. So we had a small fire on top of the grate. And  sausage minestrone soup in the slow cooker for supper was just the ticket. We couldn't get the DVD player to work well but Butch finished the book he was reading and I met my writing goal for the first time in about a week.

I'm about two-thirds of the way through The Time Travel Trailer. This book is not a mystery. Larry and Frannie and their friends have to camp on their own for a while until I finish this.
